In 2014 the work at Roxas District Hospital began: together with German Doctors, for the Mangyan community and rural eastern Mindoro.
Before
Roxas District Hospital serves the indigenous Mangyan community and the rural population of eastern Mindoro — people who often could not afford an operation.
The mission
In 2014 the team travelled to Mindoro for the first time, together with German Doctors. German Doctors treat patients locally but have no surgical capacity of their own. The team closed that gap: patients received free operations that would otherwise not have happened. Training the hospital staff was part of the plan from the very beginning.
How a mission works
In week one the team prepares the often unused operating room, sorts the equipment shipped ahead by container, examines the first patients and draws up the surgery schedule. Weeks two and three are spent operating five days a week. Week four belongs to aftercare and complex cases.
After
One mission turned into a series. The team returned to the same place in 2015, 2016 and 2017 — each year with more routine and with procedures both sides had come to share.
