The scale
2016 became the largest mission the organization had managed so far: 15 medical professionals, four weeks, around 45,000 euros for supplies, transport, and accreditation — funded entirely by donations. As always, team members paid for their flights and used their own holiday.
The mission
Across twelve operating days, 155 patients were treated: 80 major and 67 smaller procedures. Several night-time emergencies came on top.
Beyond the operating room
The team visited the indigenous population in their villages. People who cannot reach the clinic are not treated there either — knowing the roads is part of providing care.
Dr Andreas Grimme recalls people who danced and sang for the team or brought small gifts — from vegetables to a chicken. Those, he says, are very special moments.
After
For Andreas Grimme, 2016 was the first of two missions to Mindoro. The cooperation with the hospital ran so smoothly that the 2017 mission could pick up the established routines directly.
