Siquijor 2014

Before

Siquijor is where the organization's work began in 2012. In November and December 2014, the team was on the island for the third time.

The mission

As in the years before, many people received free surgery. New priorities were added: around 800 diabetes screenings, training in prevention and wound care, treatment of chronic wounds, and free mammograms for more than 60 women.

Around 70 people learned first aid, patient transport, and the care of severely injured people in courses — the kind of care needed after a typhoon, for example.

What stayed on Siquijor

For many, the screening was their first diabetes diagnosis. Since then, diabetes care has been a fixed part of the missions to Siquijor. Ulla and Bernd Decker look after screenings, counselling, and wound care, and train local nurses, for example in insulin therapy and foot health.
